North American release date: May 30, 2006. A culmination of more than 4 years of songwriting and recording work, the album was largely produced by the band themselves and financed by their own production company, with additional assistance from Peter Tägtgren during the final recording and mixing sessions at Horus Sound Studio in Hanover, Germany. The album was released simultaneously in all territories in three different configurations including a limited-edition digipak with different cover art containing the bonus track "Temple of Depression" and a vinyl LP with another bonus title, "Incantation Against You". "Incantation..." was also included as a bonus track on the Japanese edition of the album. "Incantation Against You" is an a-cappella song (no instruments), it was recorded by longtime female studio vocalist Simone Vollenweider, backed only by a male choir. The song was inspired by Mesopotamian ritual writings of banishment and the “Maklu” text in the Necronomicon; it was written by Martin Eric Ain and Simone Vollenweider.

The Canadian LP lists "Sorrows Of The Moon" as the fourth track on the first

American release by Enigma/Metal Blade added two tracks, making Morbid Tales an
LP:

These tracks were also featured on a Noise promo called Metal Attack Volume 1,
released in 1985, and later the Emperor's Return EP.
German pressing featured the heptagram in red with full poster w/ lyrics to
"Morbid Tales". First pressings had a sticker that stated "Ex-Hellhammer
members, limited black vinyl, includes poster" while subsequent issues had it
printed on the cover in silver. Noise also pressed a picture disc of this album
that dates from 1985 in a limited run of 200 copies .

Original CD release included the Emperor's Return EP.

The 1998 US digipak version also included Hellhammer - Apocalyptic Raids EP.
